You can very easily password protect an Excel or Word *file*. It is a built-in feature of those two programs.

In Word, do a Save As --> Options --> Show All --> Security

In Excel, do a Save As --> Options.

If you want to password protect an entire folder, you can create a password protected disk image using Disk Utility (part of OS X).

Open up the “Disk Utility” application
File --> New --> Disk Image from Folder…
Choose a folder to protect
Choose “AES-128″ encryption and press Save
Enter your desired new password twice
(Don't forget your password, because if you do, you can say goodbye to your encrypted data.)
