Best Mac Antivirus?????

Postby ysq6 » Mon Aug 17, 2009 6:04 am

I have a 13" MacBook Pro with iAntiVirus running as an extra precaution. However, I would like to know which is the best of the best antivirus programs for a Mac. The most popular ones are ClamXAV and iAntiVirus, but which is the downright best?

My guess would be !Antivirus, because, in my opinion, does a better scanning job.

PC Tools iAntivirus offers free Mac antivirus software to home/home office users and for a nominal fee to corporate Macintosh users. iAntivirus guards against Mac only malware - a focus that has its pros and cons.

If you are using OSX, Apple said you dont need an antivirus.

Based on that, any of the antivirus programs you mention is EXTRA protection, so any should be fine.

The reason why is because most viruses target windows, and mac because of the way its designed is more secure than windows usually.

Even if you have Mac, you DO need virus protection for what little viruses out there that do target MAC systems. Although there aren;t much companies that make antivirus for Macs, you should try Norton. I strongly suggest you use Microsoft Windows. Preferably Windows XP since it is the greatest operating system and most stable.

I'm a "security expert" and think that Macs need antivirus software. You can still spread PC viruses to your family & friends, which is why iAntiVirus sucks. There are a growing number of trojans affecting the Mac, hince the big Safari 4.0.3 patches.

I'd suggest buying Norton Antivirus 11 for your Mac. The firewall in OS X works pretty well and NAV 11 will get rid of any Mac/PC malware.

Since there hasn't been a released MacOs X virus since 2006, you really don't need any. iAntivirus looks for the 7 Mac trojans and works quickly. ClamXav also checks for the 1,000,000+ Windows viruses, so it slows your Mac down. If you are paranoid about getting a virus (you have a better chance of your MacBook getting hit by lightning or getting stolen), either one will work for you.
The 7 Mac trojans are not viruses, they require you to download fake or illegal software and install them with your admin password.

I highly recommend Trend Micro. I am an avid surfer - I constantly download things from the internet and Trend Micro's Smart Surfing for Mac protects my laptop from getting viruses and such. You guys should try it too, it really works great. Plus, it doesn't slow down Mac's performance. Trend Micro coupons is actually offering 10% off on Smart Surfing for Mac so you might want to check that out for some huge savings.
