My PC does not recognize the device. So I took it to the Genius bar at the Mac store. They were unable to get a Mac to recognize the device either. They said the only thing I could do is reformat the drive to see if that would help. Short of doing that, does anyone know of any services that are able to retrieve raw data files without connecting to the device through tradition means?

You should try calling/emailing apple tech-support. They should be able to help you.
