Apple Mail: setup an account to send but not receive or set

Postby davedavedave » Fri Feb 05, 2010 5:56 pm

Hi there

I am finally getting round to setting up my own personal website. As part of this I get to have my own email domain.

The system created a little file I downloaded that automatically added all my settings to apple mail and the account works - it can send and receive.

However I have a problem. For some reason no emails remain on the server. I would like emails to remain on the server so that I can check them from webmail or from my mobile phone when I am on the move. With my gmail account account, which is a POP account, in the advance settings there is a checkbox that says "remove copy from server after retrieving message..." I have this unchecked. I would like to do the same for my new personal account. However the personal account is an IMAP account. For some reason no such checkbox exists in the advance settings here. I thought this may be because IMAP stores everything online, but my inbox online is completely empty.

Is anyone able to advise me on this?

As an alternative, I tried setting up my new personal account to forward all mail to my gmail account. This would also be a reasonable solution as I would only have one webmail account to look at though on the go I would not be able to reply from my personal mail. Anyway the forwarding works. I still need Apple Mail to have access to the new personal account so I can send mails from it. The problem I now have is that I now get two copies of all mails to the personal account - one comes direct from the personal account and one comes from gmail. This could be solved if I could set mail up to send but not receive from the personal (IMAP) account, but I cannot work out how to do this.

Can anyone perhaps advise me on this method as well / instead.

I know this is a pretty detailed request - I have tried to give as much information as possible, but please do let me know if you have any questions. I would really appreciate any advice.

Many thanks
