What in heavens name is going on?

I'm desperate. I've been a mac user since the SE 20 was released and currently am using a G5 dual 2.3 GHz desktop running OSX 10.4.11
This current machine has been, up until the last few days, the MOST stable machine I've ever owned. Since Thursday last week its been crashing repeatedly, especially when using Firefox. Safari can't even startup, it just bombs out. Other programs have also become flaky and instead of being able to quit the process using Activity Monitor like normal the whole machine just seizes, requiring a manual reboot (which I hate as does my database if it was open at the time  )

I have two internal hard drives each 250 Gig in size and the startup drive has over 60% free space, (the second is one of my backup drives and only used every day or so for a few minutes). I have heaps of ram (2.5 Gig) and while the network here is rubbish speedwise has never given me problems stability wise. Unfortunately there is no Mac Tech support here, all the techs are Windows trained and go all pale and sickly looking if I tell them I have a Mac.
Hence I've been my own Mac support for over ten years now and have always resolved every problem pretty easily. This has me stumped.

Has anyone any suggestions? Are there any new viruses out there that have been hitting the Mac OS?

Help please, Bio

Problem solved,
a combination of faulty sectors on the boot drive and a failed ram module.
A new pair of ram modules and a new drive later and its all fixed.
