Connecting to a Windows printer

I am trying to connect my MacBook to a Canon IP3500 printer over my windows network.

I downloaded and installed the driver from Canon, and I can connect the printer to my Mac and print with it.

I have created an SMB connection to the hosting computer via the Printer and Fax Advanced tab. The Mac can see the printer but can not query it for information. If I send a document to the printer, it shows it as printing on the Mac, and spooling on the Windows system, but that's as far as I get.

The lan is wireless. The Window OS is windows 2000.

Any ideas?
