Usually, you need to use fireware or usb to connect the camera to your mac. However, if it's usb, you don't have to open imovie, just plug your camera in and turn it on. If you have already registered the camera as an external disc of your desktop, you can do it by creating a new folder and drag the files into your mac from your camera. Then disconnect your camera and open imovie and click on File>Import>Moives.
If not, you must convert the camera videos to mov or mp4 formats so that you can directly import them into your mac. Perhaps you may give a look at this mac video converter, it's really a good one for me to convert all my video files, with simple process and powerful functions. It can support many input and output formats, you may like it as i think it's really a good one for you to convert video files:

The JVC Everio is not a WalMart brand - they happen to sell them, but the JVC Everio series are consumer camcorders that record highly compressed video to hard disc drives and secure digital flash memory.

Connect the camcorder to the Mac with the included USB cable. In Play or PC mode, the memory will mount like any other external mass storage device to the desktop. Copy the MOD files to the Mac...

You will need to convert the files using a converter like StreamClip

iMovie like MOV and MP4 files. After the conversion is done, quit StreamClip and launch iMovie, drag the converted files to the iMovie project window.

You do not need the disc that came with the camcorder. The software that comes with any consumer grade camcorder is useless and unnecessary - whether Macintosh, Windows/Vista or other operating system.

As we know that the .mod files can only be recorded by your camcorders such as SV AV100, Canon MOD Camcorders, JVC (MOD and TOD) and Panasonic (MOD only) etc. However, iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, Blackberry, PSP, Creative Zen, iriver, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch, iPod shuffle, iPod Nano, iPod Classic, etc. are such popular portable devices that we usually use. But, in fact, they can’t recognize .mod files. What should we do when this happens?
Don’t worry.MOD Converter for Mac is just for you to solve this problem. This powerful MOD Converter for Mac is able to decode and convert .mod to other more common video formats like MOV, DV, MPEG, AVI, MPG, MP4, FLV, MKV, etc. with fast speed and without any quality loss. I have a JVC Everio HD300 (AVCHD) camcorder,i am annoyed with the MTS files, for they counldn't be edit on Adobe Premiere but now i found out a fastest and easiest way to solve it-just use a professional HD Video converter which can convert MTS/TOD/MOD to wmv, mov, mp4, avi, etc. without any problem.Pavtube HD Video Converter seems to do a decent job. I've had good results converting the .mts files to .mov, with the settings h.264, 1200, 1280*720, 25fps, aac. The files look good on my Mac running Adobe Premiere, edit easily, and convert well to DVD format.

So download it and have a try.
